The State Game of Massachusetts

I've been away from this blog of late, just like it's been awhile since I've actually stepped out on a basketball court. Between work and the weather and a long vacation to Nantucket (where I made it to the golf course for the first time in over a year) I just haven't found the time to play. But the good news is that Governor Romney has just signed a proclamation officially declaring Basketball as the State Game of Massachusetts. It's only appropriate, since this is where Dr Naismith first invented the game over a century ago now. That is, unless you believe that the Mayans actually were playing a version of basketball centuries before Columbus had even "discovered" America. But Springfield is still the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame. And the Celtics are still the most successful professional sports franchise in modern history...not withstanding their recent tough times in the post-Bird era.

I'm not really sure what it means for Basketball to be named the State Game of Massachusetts. But it does make me feel a little happier to be living here. And who knows? -- maybe this week I'll actually make it back into the gym. Provided I don't decide to hit the links again instead....
